Rangers 2 - 3 Greystones Frank Cox Cup Final
Palmerstown sadly fell at the final hurdle in the AUL complex on Sunday 9th to a stubborn greystones team.
A mixture of cup final jitters and not being quick enough out of the blocks combined to a poor start to the first half for rangers. They found themselves two down at half-time and but for the wonderful efforts of Gavin Walsh and Lee Dunne in the defence Parmo could have been a lot worse off. Add to that parmo`s man of the match in goalkeeper Garreth Keegan, who pulled out top drawer save after save the lads were still gallantly in the game. Robbie glennon turned on a half volley smasher only to see to "Stones" keeper push a superb save onto the crossbar. The second half was a different story however and although greystones got the elusive third parmo pressed very hard and it would be fair to say had the most of the play. A quick break on 50 mins saw Ian Kavanagh get one back for rangers. Then Johnston, Maguire and Weekes all had shots on goal. Fitzgearld came on as a second half sub and made a big impact in midfield. He began to dictate the game and much to the wonder of everyone got booked for falling over - an offence that only referee bowes would be able to explain. Fitzgearld on 70 mins was to play a through ball into the path of Kavanagh who in turn got bundled in the box. Ref got it right this time and called for the peno which was duly tucked away by the ever reliable Gavin Walsh. As palmerstown begun to look for the important equaliser Fitzgearld was to get caught by quick feet and foul his man. Correctly he was booked but sadly had to walk. Palmerstown pushed and pressed but it was greystones day. Manager Walsh said after the game "the lads have done great to get this far and will hold their heads up high, and try again next year. They must now focus on tuesday night and back to the league where we will still contend to lift the title."
