Under 17’s 2 V Shamrock Rovers 0 A well deserved 2 nil win against Shamrock Rovers in the Leinster Youths cup moved the 17s into the 3rd round.
Despite the recent bad weather, the match was played in very good conditions in Mill Lane. Both teams passed the ball very well with Rangers looking more dangerous in the 1st half. Despite Rovers fielding several players from their U20 Eircom league side, it was Rangers who looked the better team. Excellent defending in particular from Gav McCormack and Donal Murray meant that Rovers didn't have many efforts on goal. Midway through the 1st half Al Caul broke into the box and scored with a clever finish over the keeper. Rangers continued to dominate in the 2nd half with Ismail Nouhi and Cillian McCormack in midfield playing particularly well. Rangers were denied a definite penalty when Sean Nolan was taken down after some great play. They finally got the 2nd goal they deserved after Ian Jackson Ryan was taken down for a penalty. He intercepted a pass back to the centre half and caused panic in the Rovers defence before he won the penalty. Alan Hope calmly slotted the penalty away to give Rangers a 2 goal cushion. Rovers applied some pressure in the last 10 minutes but great teamwork all round along with a couple of good saves from Kevin Deegan meant Rangers finished the game with a clean sheet and an impressive win.
